Unemployed

Well, they didn’t extend us like they said they would. My interview got a bit screwed up over that – not that I did very good in it anyway. Anyway we got laid-off on Friday. I don’t feel worried about it – until I think of job hunting and then I get paralyzed with fear and anxiety. I need to get out and get started, but this three day weekend has been oppressive. I’ve heard that Friday is the worst day to lose your job, as it gives you a weekend to stew and worry and no chance to do anything about it. I fully believe that now. I just hope I can get over my anxiety and get started tomorrow.

Extended – Dammit

They gave us a month extension on our contract so now we are working until the end of September. Nice to have more income, but I have an interview tomorrow for a full-time job. I guess that if they offer me a position I will see if I can get evenings and weekends until they cut us loose.

Long Time, No Whine…

‘Tis been a while since last I posted, but now is as good a time as any. I am about to be unemployed. End of the week (August 31st) is the end of our contract. I am greatly bummed about this. I knew that the contract wouldn’t last forever, but I didn’t expect it to end this year. I had my money on next May.

I am expecting to take a pay-cut of at least 25%. It could be much worse. At least I am debt-free now. Wish me luck.

Still Alive and Still Lazy…

Though I have long been away I still live and wheeze. The weeks drag and life goes on.

On the OSS front, I have upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 and after fixing the mess they made of Pulseaudio in their distribution, I am very happy with it. The tools it gives me rock hard. I just turned some video into a video DVD quickly, cleanly and without error. The same process when in Windows land required $100 paid to Nero, triple the transcoding time, and many wasted discs. DVDStyler is great. I just wish I had found it before Nero had sucked up my cash. It also works in Windows. I have no idea why the Nero program took 90 minutes longer than DVDStyler to transcode, but the improved speed was great. My only issue was that I used text as chapter buttons in my project and it didn’t anti-alias that so I got “jaggies.”

Now I am looking for a good IDE and enough motivation to overcome my fear of C++. Any suggestions world?
